经过此前的预热，11bit 正式公布其新作《冰汽时代 2》，并宣布大家可在 8 月 12 日至 8 月 16 日期间免费游玩 Steam 版《冰汽时代》。另外官方透露，《冰汽时代2》仅为 11bit 工作室正在开发的三款新作中的一款。目前官方尚未公布《冰汽时代2》的发售日期，大家可以先在 Steam 上加个愿望单。游戏将登陆 Steam、GOG 和 Epic 商城。
在《冰汽时代》的续作中，玩家将再次扮演迫切寻求资源的大都会领袖。在这里，扩张和寻找新的能量来源是不可避免的现实。然而，这世界已然该改变。经历了煤炭时代后，在霜冻之地发展石油开采工业将成为残存人类的全新救赎。不过，改变往往并非一帆风顺，在全新的复杂社会中，也并非每个人都会热情欢迎这种全新的展望。
《冰汽时代 2》联合总监雅库布·斯托卡尔斯基（Jakub Stokalski）表示：「充足的人力确保了我们能够细致打磨从整体规模、产品价值以及用户体验在内的各个方面，不过我们这次可不仅仅是推出系列续作这么简单。我们的目标是向玩家提供一个大大超越前作《冰汽时代》的体验。」
雅库布还分享了他对《冰汽时代 2》的宏伟愿景：「玩家们将能体验浩如烟海般的丰富选择，按照自己的愿景塑造社会与城市…以及承担相对应的后果。建立在前作的冲突之上，《冰汽时代 2》将继续深入探究生存与道德、人性与极端霜冻之间的博弈。但是最重要的是，续作将在包括政策、社会或是科技发展等系列既有的元素中融入人类与人性之间的矛盾冲突。」
